Nyapathi r.Rao,MD,MS, graduated from Kurnool Medical college,India in 1975 and received his training in psychiatry at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center,New York.Dr.Rao,Board Certified in Psychiatry with added qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry,is quite well known for his insights into the issues of international medical graduates.
He is the Chairperson for the Committee on International Medical Graduates for the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry(GAP) and an Associate Editor in the Editorial Board of the APPI Press.A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association,he chairs the APA Council of Medical Education and Life Long Learning.
Dr.Rao is quite active within the AADPRT and has been the chairman of the AADPRT Task Force on IMGs.Dr.Rao developed a comprehensive language and acculturation program in collabaration with Brooklyn College for IMG Residents in various specialties at Brookdale University hospital.In 1997,Dr.Rao developed a National Mentorship program for IMG residents under the auspices of AADPRT.The many honors received by Dr.Rao include the Parker J Palmer Award for Outstanding Residency Training Director from the ACGME.
Dr.Rao served as the Chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin(AAPIO).He had been quite active with the Indo American Psychiatric Association and served as the Editor of the Forum.Dr.Rao received "IAPA Excellence in Service Award" for 2004.
